Charismatic Chaos

By Douglas Molgaard

When so many people were running to Florida to get the next new blessing from the next new prophet I only shook my head and said when will they learn. When will the church run to Jesus and do His mission. I haven’t called myself a charismatic for a long time. I still believe in the works and wonders that the Holy Spirit does through us but that should never be the focus. We need to be careful of those moments that puts us into a spiritual high. Those moments are amazing and special but they can also be superficial if our worship is not whole; body, soul and spirit. When our faith takes root and goes deeper it is not reliant on spiritual or emotional highs our worship comes from the deep parts of our being and our faith is secure in our hearts where we can meet God in silents as an individual. When the Holy Spirit is at work in us He causes us to look outside ourselves towards others to see the brokenness around us and stirs a passion in us to DO the will of the Father and the mission of the Son.

Let’s keep Jesus, his word and mission as our focus. When the Bible, the gifts, the Holy Spirit, the institutional Church, the apostle, prophet, pastor, teacher, evangelist, music, buildings, etc. become our focus we will always miss the point and fall.

Follow Jesus!

    Have you read MacArthur’s book?

I really liked it, mostly for his candor and extensive scholarship in recording the history of several Charismatic movements.

I do have to admit that I liked Hanegraaff’s book, “Counterfeit Revival” because it zeroed in on figures similar to Todd Bentley, Benny Hinn, and Sun Myung Moon – and didn’t attack the less chaotic, day to day, Charismatic.

But I really like what you’ve written here. You’re so right. We need to have this focus on Jesus Christ and the glory of God, not the sensations and wonder we feel at these big show miracle conventions.
